Hong Kong International Airport sits on an artificial island 34 kilometers west of Central, which means your transport choice matters more than at compact urban airports. The rebuilt Terminal 2 opened to passengers on 27 May 2026, completing the airport's expansion to handle over 200 destinations worldwide. Two facts surprise first-timers: Hong Kong eliminated arrival cards permanently on 16 October 2024 — you walk straight to immigration with just your passport — and the Airport Express train reaches Central in 24 minutes, faster than most taxis.

At the Airport
Immigration and Customs Flow
Immigration is busiest early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) from overnight transatlantic flights, mid-morning (10:00 AM–12:00 PM) from European arrivals, and evening (6:00–10:00 PM) from Pacific and Asian arrivals. Travellers typically clear immigration, collect baggage, and pass customs in 30–35 minutes on average; peak times stretch to 45–60 minutes. Current live estimates show approximately 22 minutes for security and 37 minutes for immigration, though these fluctuate throughout the day.
There is no arrival card to fill out. Hong Kong permanently eliminated all arrival and departure card requirements on 16 October 2024 for every traveller — no replacement form, no QR code, no online submission. You walk directly to the immigration counter with your passport.
After reclaiming baggage, proceed to Customs control. Use the red channel if you have goods to declare or carry currency or bearer instruments exceeding HKD 120,000; otherwise, use the green channel.
Eligible visitors can enroll for e-Channel service at offices in the arrivals halls (North and South) after passing immigration if you have visited Hong Kong airport twice or more in the past 24 months or hold certain travel documents. Enrollment is free and speeds up future entries; fingerprint capture is no longer required for e-passport holders.
Insider tip: Travellers report immigration lines on the far right — furthest from the gates — are typically shorter than those nearest the escalators. Walk the extra distance for potentially faster clearance.
Lounge Access
Pay-in lounges are available throughout Terminal 1. Plaza Premium Lounge operates multiple locations, with some open 24 hours, offering showers, dining areas, Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating. You can pre-book access online or purchase on arrival. Club Autus (Hong Kong Airlines) in Terminal 1 Midfield Concourse operates 6:30 AM – 2:30 AM; walk-in access from HKD 600 for four hours. Airline lounges (Cathay Pacific, Emirates, others) are reserved for premium-cabin passengers and status holders.
WiFi, SIM Cards, Currency, ATMs
Free wireless internet is available in all seating and public areas with no registration required. Connect to "#HKAirport Free WiFi" or "#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi." Over 6,700 mobile charging stations are located throughout the terminals, equipped with UK-style three-pin outlets and USB ports (Hong Kong uses Type G plugs — bring an adapter if your devices don't have USB charging).
SIM cards are sold at arrivals-level counters:
- 1010
- 7-Eleven
- China Mobile
- Travelex
- Circle K
5G Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM Cards are available at 1010 Centre, csl shop, and convenience stores. Currency exchange counters operate landside and airside, with some locations open 24 hours. ATMs are available throughout Terminal 1.
Prayer Rooms, Nursing Rooms, Family Facilities
Prayer rooms are located:
- Terminal 1 Satellite Concourse: near Gates 42 and 211 (Departures Level L6), near Gates 13–21 (Departures Level L5)
- Terminal 1 Midfield Concourse: near Gate 211 (Departures Level L6), by the end of Check-in Aisle A (Departures Level L7)
Thirty-nine nursing rooms equipped with changing and feeding facilities are located throughout the terminals: 16 in Terminal 1, 5 in Terminal 2, 4 in T1 Satellite Concourse, 11 in T1 Midfield Concourse, and 3 in SkyPier Terminal. Family-friendly Buzz Zones and Wonder Zones feature cartoons and entertainment to keep children occupied. Infant strollers with luggage storage are available in the restricted area for free (no reservation required), or you can hire a baby stroller through your airline.
Food and Dining
Dining options span both landside and airside areas, with hundreds of outlets ranging from fast food to full-service restaurants. Major international chains and local Hong Kong eateries are widely available. Restaurants, cafés, and bakeries open before the first Airport Express departure (~5:50 AM). A 7-Eleven in the arrivals area lets you grab snacks, drinks, or a local SIM immediately after baggage claim.
Free drinking water refill stations are available airside in Terminal 1 near Gates 23 and 60, and in the Midfield Concourse near Gate 201.
Late-Night and 24-Hour Facilities
Free unlimited WiFi operates 24/7. Free shower facilities are available airside in Terminal 1 Arrivals Level (L5) near Gate 12 and Gate 43, operating 24 hours; hair dryers, shampoo, and body wash are provided, with towels available from vending machines. Some currency-exchange counters and Plaza Premium Lounges operate 24 hours. Designated public resting lounges with padded recliners are scattered throughout Terminal 1 airside — not as private as pay lounges, but free and comfortable for naps.
The Airport Express first train departs the airport at 5:54 AM; the last train leaves at 12:48 AM. After midnight, passengers rely on night buses, taxis (available 24/7), or ride-hailing apps.
Getting To and From HKIA
Airport Express (MTR)
The Airport Express is the signature connection: air-conditioned, step-free, climate-controlled trains running every 10 minutes with journey times unaffected by road traffic.
Route and timing:
- Airport → Tsing Yi: 18 minutes
- Airport → Kowloon: 21 minutes
- Airport → Hong Kong (Central): 24 minutes
Operating hours:
- From airport: 5:54 AM – 12:48 AM
- From Hong Kong Station: 5:50 AM – 12:48 AM
- From Kowloon Station: 5:53 AM – 12:52 AM
- From Tsing Yi Station: 6:00 AM – 12:59 AM
Fares (June 2025 onwards):
- Airport → Tsing Yi: HKD 80 (HKD 73 Octopus)
- Airport → Kowloon: HKD 115 (HKD 105 Octopus)
- Airport → Hong Kong: HKD 130 (HKD 120 Octopus)
Free in-town check-in service is available at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations (90 minutes to 24 hours before flight, depending on airline). Free shuttle buses operate between Hong Kong and Kowloon stations and major hotels every 15–20 minutes. Hong Kong Station is integrated with IFC Mall and connects directly to the MTR Island Line and Tsuen Wan Line for onward travel to Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, and beyond.
Octopus perk: Use Octopus on the Airport Express, then transfer free to MTR within one hour (excluding Light Rail and Airport Express itself). Ride Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, then continue free onward to Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, or other MTR destinations.
Same-day return: Airport Express offers a free return journey if you travel within the same day (for both Octopus and Same Day Return Ticket holders) — useful for airport greeters or quick day trips.
Cityflyer 'A' Airport Buses
Six Cityflyer routes operate: A10, A11, A12 serve Hong Kong Island; A21, A22, A29 serve Kowloon. Routes A11 and A21 are the most popular with tourists.
- A11: Runs via Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay to North Point; fare HKD 40; journey time ~60 minutes (traffic dependent).
- A21: Passes Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok to Hung Hom; operating 5:15 AM – midnight with 12–20 minute intervals; fare HKD 34.60; journey ~80 minutes.
- Octopus discount: Octopus holders enjoy a half-price return journey within the same day on Cityflyer routes.
For Tsim Sha Tsui hotels, the A21 is often cited as the most convenient direct route, with numerous stops along Nathan Road — faster end-to-end than Airport Express plus shuttle bus, and substantially cheaper for families.
Budget Alternative: S1 Bus + Tung Chung Line
The slower, cheaper option: take bus S1 from the airport to Tung Chung MTR station, then ride the Tung Chung Line into the city (same corridor as the Airport Express but with multiple stops). This route suits budget travellers or those visiting Tung Chung itself (Ngong Ping 360 cable car to Big Buddha, Citygate Outlets, Hong Kong Disneyland via transfer at Sunny Bay).
Airport Taxis
Hong Kong taxis are colour-coded by service area:
- Red (urban) taxis: Serve almost everywhere in Hong Kong, including the airport, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Kowloon, and most of the New Territories. If traveling to Causeway Bay or Tsim Sha Tsui, red taxis are the only taxis that can arrive there directly.
- Green (New Territories) taxis: Serve specific NT areas only; cannot go to Hong Kong Island or central Kowloon.
- Blue (Lantau) taxis: Operate exclusively on Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok; cannot leave Lantau.
All three colours can pick up passengers at the airport, but only red taxis can take you to most city destinations. Check taxi colour before boarding to avoid confusion.
Urban taxi initial fare: HKD 27 for the first 2 km; after that, fares increase by HKD 1.90 per 200 meters; waiting time HKD 1.90/minute. Tunnel tolls and luggage surcharges may apply. Taxis accept cash (HKD), Octopus, and increasingly, credit cards via in-car readers. Bring HKD 50–100 notes for taxis, especially early in the day when drivers may lack change.
Taxis are available from the taxi pick-up area in front of the Arrivals Hall.
Ride-Hailing Apps
Ride-hailing services operate at Hong Kong International Airport. Pickup locations depend on which arrivals hall you exit:
- Arrivals Hall A: Choose Car Park 4 in the app. Exit left through glass doors to the 2/F of Car Park 4; pickup is right in front of the glass doors.
- Arrivals Hall B: Choose Car Park 1 in the app.
Service reliability is generally good. Late-night surge pricing is common. Local ride-hailing apps include options for standard rides and licensed taxis booked via app.
Cross-Border and Intercity Options
SkyPier Ferries (Transit Passengers Only):
SkyPier provides ferry services for transfer passengers connecting to nine ports in the Greater Bay Area (mainland China and Macau). SkyPier is for transfer passengers only — not applicable to passengers originating from Hong Kong or those who have already cleared Hong Kong immigration.
Passengers should proceed to the ferry ticketing counter at Transfer Area E2. Do NOT go through immigration or reclaim baggage. Passengers who have gone through immigration cannot return to use the ferry service. Passengers should arrive at SkyPier at least 90–120 minutes before flight departure. Ferry routes serve Shenzhen Shekou, Shenzhen Fuyong (airport), Macau, Guangzhou Nansha, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Dongguan.
Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB):
Two shuttle bus routes — Hong Kong/Zhuhai and Hong Kong/Macau — operate 24 hours with peak-period headway of 5 minutes, non-peak 10–15 minutes, overnight 15–30 minutes. Shuttle bus ticket counters and vending machines are in the restricted area of the departure hall. Shuttle bus fare: HKD 65 from Hong Kong Port (HKD 70 midnight–5:59 AM).
Feeder routes to HZMB Hong Kong Port include:
- B4: To/from Hong Kong International Airport
- B5: Tung Chung
- B6: Sunny Bay Station
The Hong Kong landing point of the bridge is on an artificial island near the airport; journey from HZMB Hong Kong Port to the airport takes only about 5 minutes. Immigration is required at both ends of the bridge (Hong Kong side and Macau/Zhuhai side).
Free Macau shuttle for international travellers: The Macao Government Tourism Office offers a complimentary direct shuttle bus from Hong Kong Airport to Macau for international travelers with valid foreign travel documents; service runs January 20 to December 31, 2026. This shuttle is for transit passengers only — you do NOT clear Hong Kong immigration. Claim your ticket at the E2 counter in the restricted area.
Routes to mainland China: Cross-border coaches operate to Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and other PRD cities. Immigration is required at both ends. For entering Hong Kong first, ferries depart from Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal (Sheung Wan) or China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui), or take cross-border coach/MTR to land crossings (Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau).
Private Chauffeur Transfer
Private chauffeur transfer is available as a pre-booked, door-to-door service. Chauffeur services suit travellers who need:
- Late-night certainty after the last Airport Express departure
- Family logistics with young children, elderly parents, or multiple bags
- Business punctuality for time-critical meetings
- Oversized luggage accommodation (golf clubs, surfboards, large equipment)
Vehicle options range from sedans to multi-passenger vans or minibuses for larger groups. Chauffeur drivers monitor flight arrival times and offer meet-and-assist service at the arrivals hall with a name board. Pricing is quote-on-request and varies by destination, vehicle type, and any additional services.
Your chauffeur will meet you at the Arrivals Hall exit holding a name board with your details. All flights are tracked live to adjust for delays. The exact meet point is confirmed in your booking confirmation. Professional, courteous service is guaranteed.

Timing Intelligence
Highway Rush Windows
Morning peak: ~7:30–9:30 AM (inbound to Central/Kowloon). Evening peak: ~5:30–7:30 PM (outbound from city). The Airport Express is unaffected by road congestion. Taxis and buses experience delays during rush hours, particularly on the Tsing Ma Bridge corridor and approaching the Western Harbour Crossing or tunnel tolls. Expect A11/A21 journey times to increase by 15–30 minutes during peak periods.
Border and Checkpoint Peaks
Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are the busiest at HKIA. Mainland China public holidays — Chinese New Year, Golden Week in early October, National Day — generate exceptionally heavy cross-border traffic and long queues at immigration. Ferry and HZMB services experience peak demand. For ferry/HZMB to Macau or Zhuhai during these periods, allow an extra 1–2 hours buffer time.
Late-Night Reality — After the Last Scheduled Service
Airport Express last train departs the airport at 12:48 AM. After midnight, options are:
- Taxis (24/7 availability at arrivals)
- Ride-hailing apps (operate but surge pricing likely)
- Night buses (N-series overnight buses operate but with limited frequency and longer journey times)
- Airport hotel (Regal Airport Hotel connected to Terminal 1)
Best Time to Leave for an Early Flight
For early-morning flights departing 6:00–8:00 AM, the first Airport Express from Hong Kong Station is 5:50 AM. If your departure is earlier, rely on taxis, ride-hailing (pre-book recommended), or stay at an airport hotel.
In-town check-in at Hong Kong/Kowloon stations is available 90 minutes to 24 hours before departure; service hours 5:30 AM – 12:30 PM. If checking in at the airport itself, arrive 3 hours before international flights per general guidance. Travellers typically allow 2–2.5 hours before international flights as a baseline.
Immigration and Check-In Timing Variance
Busiest immigration hours: 6:00–9:00 AM, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM, and 6:00–10:00 PM. Security clearance at HKG is very efficient; immigration can be bypassed by HKID holders and e-Channel users. For departures, check-in time is unpredictable (could be a few minutes or 30+ minutes); however, Hong Kong immigration and security clearance into the restricted area is generally very fast.
Minimum connection time for checked-through luggage is 50 minutes. If baggage is not checked through and you must re-clear immigration, allow about 3 hours.
Worth Knowing
In-town check-in saves time: Check in and drop bags at Hong Kong or Kowloon Station 90 minutes to 24 hours before departure. Travel to the airport baggage-free and skip airport check-in queues. Confirm your airline participates in the program.
